Amputee Resources

Support Resources for Amputees
  • Amputee Peer Counseling (AMPOWER)

  • The Hanger clinics’ Amputee Peer Counseling Program, AMPOWER, seeks to empower and strengthen those affected by amputation or limb difference through peer mentorship, educational resources, and community events. Peer counselors can speak with amputees, family members and loved-ones in person, on the phone or online to provide emotional support, including an understanding of the grieving process. They serve as role-models and can answer a range of basic questions about the recovery process, using a prosthesis, and the concerns of daily living. Peer counselors are available to talk before and after an amputation, and can support parents who are expecting a child with a limb difference.

Online support is available at EmpoweringAmputees.org

To request local (Massachusetts) peer support, contact Rebekah Ray, 508-930-3729 cell, or email rray@hanger.com

Paying for Prosthetics

For those ineligible for MassHealth there are a few foundations that may be able to help:

  • The Limbs for Life Foundation
Provides payment for lower limb prosthetic care for amputees who are US citizens or legal residents who have no other means of obtaining a lower limb. To get assistance, complete the application and then have your prosthetist or clinic complete their section. Send application, proof of household income (award letters, benefit statement, pay stubs) and photo ID to Limbs for Life Foundation by mail, email or fax. Once your complete application is received, background check and review can take up to six weeks. Call 405-843-5174 for more information.
  • Bowman Siciliano Limb Bank Foundation
Collects and distributes all forms of prosthetic limbs to those in need. They collaborate at times with other foundations to assist in countries outside the U.S. and prosthetic labs across the U.S. They raise funds to provide transportation, lodging, and prosthetic limbs and services to those in need. Call (817)-597-1826 for more information.
  • The Barr Foundation Amputee Assistance Fund (BFAAF) provides assistance for amputees that cannot afford limbs and have no other financial resources. This foundation is closed.
